Before you apply for the ORE
To apply for the ORE you will need to fill in our application form, and send in supporting documents at the same time. Once accepted, please expect to wait six to 12 months to sit your first exam

The fees for the exams are
Part 1 - £600
Part 2 - £2250
Before applying, you need to make sure you meet our clinical experience and English language requirement. You will need to send evidence of the following
Clinical experience requirement
You must have at least 1600 hours of clinical experience where you have personally treated patients in the dental chair. The number of hours of this clinical experience will either be hours spent undertaking appropriate investigations and administering dental treatment
during your dental degree
during post-qualification experience; or
a combination of the two
It could also be undertaken during temporary registration
This cannot include time observing other dentists or assisting other dentists/dental students in undertaking diagnosis/treatment planning or provision of treatment
English language requirement
You will need to submit a single, Academic IELTS Test Report Form with your application or we will be unable to accept it. Only Academic IELTS Test Report Forms will be accepted. Other language tests or qualifications and the length of time spent in an English-speaking country will not be considered
The form must
be no more than two years old on receipt at the GDC;
show a minimum overall band score of 7.0; and
show no score lower than 6.5 in any section.
You are exempt from submitting an IELTS Test Report Form if
You are a national of the EEA ; or
entitled to be treated no less favourably than nationals of the EEA
If you are not an EEA national and are married to a UK national you must submit a single, acceptable Academic IELTS Test Report Form with your application
How to apply for the ORE
Please download the application pack and complete the application form. You can submit your application at any time of year
Please read the 'Application form guidance' and make sure that you submit the correct documents. Incomplete applications cannot be processed
What happens next
When we receive your application, we will
send you an acknowledgement by email within five working days
check all your documents
contact your referees
contact you if there is a problem with your application
put you on the waiting list once everything is approved
You will be invited to your first exam when you reach the top of the waiting list. Invitations are emailed eight to 12 weeks before the date of the exam. You will be asked to pay for the exam when you accept your invitation
Taking the ORE
The ORE has two parts which must be taken – and passed – in order. The purpose of Part 1 is to test candidates’ application of knowledge to clinical practice and Part 2 is designed for candidates to demonstrate practical clinical skills.We have guidance documents to help you prepare for the exams as well as navigate your way through the exams process
You will be allowed four attempts for Part 1, and four attempts for Part 2. If you fail either Part 1 or Part 2 of the exam four times you will not be allowed to sit the exam again. You will also have to pass Part 2 within five years of first sitting Part 1
How much does each exam cost
The fees for the ORE are
Part 1 - £600
Part 2 - £2250
There is also a one-off fee for the Medical Emergencies component should you need to take this on its own. This will be £300
PLEASE NOTE: These fees have been approved by an outside government body called the Privy Council. The regulations came into force on 16 July 2007 and can be found under 'Rules' on this website
Where are the exams held
All sittings of the ORE will be in Central London
Part 1 will be held at King's College, London Part 2 will be held in various venues
Manikin exercise - Eastman Dental Institute, Gray's Inn Road
OSCEs - January 2010 Part 2 will be held at The Royal College of Anaesthetists, Red Lion Square. Subsequent OSCEs will be held at The Royal College of Surgeons, Lincoln's Inn Fields
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning exercise - Eastman Dental Hospital, Gray's Inn Road
Medical Emergencies exercise - Eastman Dental Hospital, Gray's Inn Road
For the OSCE component at the GMC, you will be provided with suitable refreshments and so you need not bring any food with you unless you have specific dietary requirements.For the Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Medical Emergencies and Dental Manikin exercises at the Eastman, it will not be possible to provide refreshments other than tea, coffee and water. You are advised to bring your own food
When do I find out my result?
Your exam results will be sent to you by email within 15 working days of the exam.
Part 1 results - you will be given a mark out of 50 for Paper 1 and for Paper 2, as well as an overall pass or fail award. As the exam is taken at a computer, the results are calculated as soon as you click 'submit
There is no room for error in this marking system and so we do not offer the opportunity of questioning the marks awarded. It is not possible to provide you with feedback on your performance in this exam
Part 2 results - You will be given a pass or fail award for each component of the exam as well as an overall pass or fail award. Your results email will have an attachment giving you feedback on your performance in each component. This consists of statements on your performance or an indication of your strengths and weaknesses
Please remember that we do not accept appeals against results nor disagreements with our examiners' decisions. An appeal will not lead to results being changed. If you feel that your exams procedure was severely defective or that you were placed at a disadvantage when compared to other candidates during the exam, please provide us with your feedback. We will investigate all genuine grievances submitted within 28 days of the exam
After you have passed the ORE
When you pass the ORE you will be sent your Part 2 results by email, along with feedback on your performance. Within the following ten working days you will also be sent a letter which tells you how you can register. You can also download the registration form and apply. The GDC assessments team will be sent the names of the people who passed the ORE, so there is no need for you to contact them separately
When you send back your completed registration application form, registration fee and valid certificate of good standing, our assessments team will take over and you no longer need to communicate with the exams team
PLEASE NOTE: If you have changed your name since applying for the ORE and wish to be registered under your new name, you will have to send a certified copy of your name change document with your registration application
Once your registration is completed, you will be able to practise dentistry in the UK
Working in the UK
You should be aware that the Home Office has removed the categories of ‘employed dental practitioner’, 'employed dental assistant' and ‘vocational dental practitioner’ from the list of UK shortage occupations.
You may also be asked to do up to a year’s Vocational Training (VT) in order to work for the NHS. This will be influenced by your qualifications and experience and will be at the discretion of the Primary Care Trust which employs you.

Part 1 April 2010 Diet
There are 300 places available for the April Part 1 Diet and 150 for the Supplementary exam. Details of when the Invitations for the Supplementary Exam will follow in due course. The first round of invitations for the April Part 1 diet will be sent at 5:00 pm on 13 January 2010. All 51 candidates who have been invited will be guaranteed a place on the examination provided they contact us to book a place by 4:00 pm on Friday 15 January 2010
Calls to accept a place on the examination will be taken from 9:00am onwards throughout the two days. Further details will be sent with the invitation
If you do not receive an invitation, this does not mean that you are not on the waiting list and you will not receive an invitation. There are 300 places in total available for the ORE Part 1 and invitations will be sent in batches
Candidates will indeed receive an invitation as they move higher up the wait list. Invitations to all candidates on the wait list is based on the criteria stated previously, i.e. the longest waiting candidate. As there are over 800 candidates waiting to sit the Part 1 exam please be aware that your fellow candidates may be higher on the list than yourself
ORE Part 2 January 2010
The ORE Part 2 January 2010 exam is now fully booked
We will be sending invitations to candidates eligible for the ORE medical emergency re-sit exam in January 2010 at 5:30pm Monday 30 November 2009. All candidates invited for this exam are guaranteed a place provided they contact us before 5:00pm Friday 4 December 2009. Further details will be sent with the invitation.
